No 11. Suntan Lotion Recipe
Date: 1950s and 1960s
Why is it important: Chemists manufactured their own products, in a manner unthinkable today.
Tony Yoward was a pharmacist in North Street, Emsworth from 1952 to 1986 and his family kept many items from the business dating back to that time and donated them to the Museum. His formulae book is on display at a page showing the formulae for sunburn lotion.
Chemists at that time frequently made their own preparations ranging across various concoctions, linctuses, ointments, powders, sprays, and creams. The entries are handwritten. In the cabinet you will also see a manual pill maker and some of the jars that contained the raw materials from which the various preparations were made.
