Lewmar winch

Date: 1960s

Why is it important: Innovation in sailing. A company that started in Emsworth is now a world leader.

In 1946, Len Lewery joined forces with Leslie Marsh to establish Lewmar in a workshop on the site owned by Leslie on what is now the South Street carpark, Emsworth. Len Lewery had designed fittings for small boats made from Tufnol (an inert resin-based material). The first blocks were used to equip the Firefly class in the 1948 Olympics. Rachet blocks to Len’s design are included in the Museum’s display.

Practical experience and sound engineering have made Lewmar winches the first choice for yachts sailing in important international races such as the America’s Cup, the Admiral’s Cup and the gruelling Whitbread Round the World Races.

Find these on the South Wall just to the left of the entrance doors.
