No 5. Edward 1st Silver Penny
Date: 13th/14th century
Why is it important: Circumstantial evidence that the remains of the Warblington Roman villa were quarried to build Warblington church.
In our Warblington cabinet is a long cross silver penny issued from 1279 (Edward I or Edward II). The purpose of the long cross is to make it very difficult to trim the edges and so debase the coinage. This was found in a dig close to Warblington church which reinforces the circumstantial evidence that the Roman villa site was quarried to provide building material for the Church.
