No 16. Parachute Scarf

EMHT721.JPG

Detail of the scarf knitted from German parachute cord.

Date: 2nd World War

Why is it important: Evidence of the level of deprivation during the 2nd World War.

This 4-foot knitted scarf was made using the nylon and silk from the cords of a parachute. The parachute was used to drop an enemy landmine on Orange Grove, South Street, destroying it. The scarf was made soon after the mine was dropped in about 1940 by Mrs Whittington who lived in Nile Street. It is a reminder of the deprivations of living during the war that people would make clothing from such an item.

Find it on the west wall.
