No 18. Rope Walk

IMG_2936.JPG

The rope walk strung and ready for use.

Date: 1890s

Why is it important: Rope Making was an important source of income. It probably paid for the wedding dress.

Emsworth was a seafaring town. The seafaring community was supported by a number of related industries, one of which was ropemaking. At its peak, Emsworth had two ropewalks, in addition to this smaller ropewalk. This business was important to Emsworth and very profitable. It paid for the splendid wedding dress on display in the Museum.

You will find this in front of you to the left as you enter the main exhibition hall.
